Next, I walked down to temple 72 – Mandalaji. Built in 596, built to be the clan temple for the Saeki family, Kūkai’s ancestors. After returning from China, he dedicated the Kongōkai, and Taizōkai Mandala and changed the name of the temple.












Moving onto Temple 74 – Kōyamaji. When Kūkai was thinking of building a temple between 2 others, an old man appeared from a cave and said, “If you build a temple here, I will protect it forever.”
